ERA FINALIST 2025

Packed full of mathematical learning potential, this versatile, double-sided number line is perfect for developing a secure understanding of numbers one to ten. This more advanced resource has one long base slot, encouraging children to estimate spatially, to order the bears. Children will enjoy playfully learning as they match the bears’ numerals to the dot patterns on the duvet.

By using the unmarked sides and the delightful details on the bears, children will be encouraged to explore number bonds and spot and create repeating patterns using the bears’ arm positions, fur and pyjama colours, nose and ear shapes!

Children will enjoy acting out the popular song Ten in the Bed and making the bears roll out of bed!  Guidance and activity ideas written by early years maths specialist Dr Cath Gripton are available as a download.

  1. Jenny Pearson, EYFS Teacher, Honey Hive Early Years

I love that they are different on each side and the Numicon side of the bed was great to link with practical play. They children matched the pieces and decided each piece could be a mini bed for the bears that fall out. They loved noticing the different details on each bear, such as the colours, if they were waving, pockets and patterns on their pjs and the “cute little teddy” one was holding.

  2. Sam Goldsworthy, Childminder

We absolutely love Ten in a Bed. It’s a great resource that we add to our daily song time. It brings the nursery rhyme to life. We also add it to our bookish play corner with the 10 in the bed book. It impacts the learning greatly as it provides a hands-on visual approach to the nursery rhyme which is the best way to learn for little ones.

  3. Molly Howard, Reception Teacher, Greenvale Primary School

At our nursery, the children absolutely love the Ten in the Bed set from @yellowdooreducation! It has become an essential part of our daily singing sessions, and we also use it to enhance play experiences, incorporating it into areas like our playdough table

  4. Mia Edmunds, Reception Teacher, West Monkton C of E School

In my opinion, the set is very cleverly designed to weave a range of mathematical concepts into the children’s play without them even realizing they are doing it! I love that it is inspired by a well-known and popular song to hook the children in too. Repetition and rhyme is a brilliant way to embed number sense and develop a deep understanding of numbers to 10.

  5. Hannah Knight, Reception Teacher, Haynes Lower School

The resource is well made and durable, the bears are an ideal size for the children in Reception to pick up and use. It is colourful, attractive and fun to use. The children in my class were very keen to have a go.

The bears could be used in so many different ways, sorting, matching, colours, patterns which means that the resource can be used over and over but with a different emphasis each time or you can combine more than one learning objective in a lesson.

  6. Charlotte Bray, Reception Teacher & Phase Lead, University of Cambridge Primary School

Cath Gripton’s guidance… provides simple and effective CPD that can be used by any adult wanting to use this resource with young learners. Guidance with such detail is a real selling point for us as a team.

  7. Lizzie Lawrence, Early Years Practitioner, Collingwood School Nursery

The innovative nature of the “10 in a Bed” resource lies in its versatility and adaptability. It encourages both individual and collaborative learning, allowing children and teachers to engage with it in a variety of ways.

  8. Steph Almond, Reception Teacher & Phase Lead, Lawn Primary School

This little set has been fantastic for supporting and helping to develop a solid foundation in our mathematical learning. We have used the bears to support with number recognition and to match the numerals to the correct corresponding dots on the bed

  9. Helen Crisp, Assistant Head Teacher, Brunswick Nursery School

‘Ten in the Bed’ has been very popular with the children in nursery; it has been out as part of continuous provision and has been in almost constant use. The children have been counting the bears and lining them up both in and out of the base, as well as chatting about their similarities and differences. They are so popular we have to check they don’t go home in pockets!
